Welcome to the official site of Godly Play Southwest!
Godly Play is an approach to religious education that goes beyond the traditional, moral-informational approach to truly nurture the spiritual nature of the child. The goal of Godly Play is to teach children the art of using religious language to enable them to know God first-hand rather than just knowing about God (second-hand knowledge). In Godly Play, children are encouraged and supported in their individual spiritual journeys so that they can truly own their faith.
The Southwest Region for Godly Play includes Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah and is part of a world-wide community. This website tells you about trainers and workshops in our region. To access information about events and trainers in the U.S. and around the world, please visit the website for The Godly Play Foundation (www.godlyplayfoundation.org). There you can also learn more about our founder, Dr. Jerome W. Berryman — teacher, author and priest to adults as well as children. Dr. Berryman first conceived of this approach in 1972 and has been working with children and adults ever since to develop an approach which respects the deep spiritual needs of children as well as those who teach them.
